Course Descriptions


Online Courses

In order to take the online training courses offered you will need to create a MyScouting account (using your e-mail address as your login). This account gives you direct access to e-learning and other options depending on your profile.

Go to
www.scouting.org and click on the top right tab named MyScouting to create an account the first time. Make sure to have your council number (Tuscarora Council # is 424) and your member ID # from your registration card when creating your account. If you need your member ID #, you can also call the council registrar at the council office (919) 734-1714.


Fast Start Training
As the first step in the training continuum, Fast Start Training is meant to provide all the information and resources for new leaders to conduct their first meeting, along with guidance for the meetings that follow.
Self-study, rather than group training, is the preferred method for Fast Start Training. This gives the new leader the opportunity to learn at his or her own pace. You must first sign up for an account on myscouting.org.


This Is Scouting

This Is Scouting is an online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules. It picks up where Fast Start left off and introduces participants to the following areas of the Scouting program. This Is Scouting replaces New Leader Essentials
. It takes about an hour to complete. Participants must correctly answer questions at the end of each module, and upon successful completion, they will receive a certificate of completion. The training code for This Is Scouting is WAO1. You must first sign up for an account on myscouting.org.


Youth Protection
The BSA places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. This course covers the BSA's Youth Protection policies, kinds of abuse, signs of abuse, how to respond to disclosure of abuse and proper reporting procedures. It does so by taking you through situations that require choices and produce consequences. Successful completion of this course requires an 80 percent or higher score. You must first sign up for an account on myscouting.org.


Other Courses

The online training program also offers other courses such as Climb on Safely, Physical Wellness, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Weather Hazards and more. You must first sign up for an account on myscouting.org.


In-Person Courses


BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation)
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is a one-day training event that introduces leaders and parents to the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping. This training is required for any adult who is in charge of planning a pack camp out Participants who complete this training course will:

  • Understand the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA outdoor program.
  • Gain the skills needed to plan and carry out a successful Cub Scout-level overnight activity.
  • Learn more about the resources available from the BSA for carrying out this activity.


Cub Scout Leader Pow-Wow
Pow Wow is a one-day supplemental training offered for Cub Scout leaders that is guaranteed to give you confidence and skills necessary for an exciting program. This training offers a variety of courses designed to give additional information on specific areas of Cub Scouting that you can immediately bring back to use in running your den or pack programs. A variety of courses are offered.


Leader Specific Training

Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the BSA's values-based program, he or she can begin training for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Each course is designed for a specific leadership position. For example, separate courses are available for Cub, Boy Scout and Venturing leaders.


Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Webelos Leaders, Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters and Varsity Scout coaches. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences. The course is typically a day and a half long, but a leader can move at an accelerated pace by demonstrating mastery of a specific skill. The emphasis is on the skill, rather than on attending the course.


University of Scouting
This one-day training program offers a wide variety of courses for all adult and youth Scouting leaders. Participants can choose from a variety of training courses and can choose more if time permits. Courses include Leader Specific Training, cooking, backpacking, helping Scouts with special needs, unit administration and more.


Woodbadge

Woodbadge is the advanced training program for all adult Scouting leaders. It is designed to increase participants’ leadership skills. The Wood Badge program consists of two parts - practical training and application. The practical leadership experience is gained in a training setting (held over two three-day weekends) where leadership skills can be learned and practiced. At the conclusion of the practical training, each participant makes a commitment to complete a set of personal goals related to his/her Scouting position.  All Scouters that have completed the basic training for their position are eligible to attend Woodbadge. This course is by application only.
